Angling Life A Fisherman Reflects on Success Failure and the Ultimate Catch Captain Dan Keating Dave Mull Bob Roberts 9780977427338 Books Reviews
My favorite stories are journeys, and this book has shown me the most entertaining and best journey of all.
Not a fisherman myself, my boys are; and I feel that reading this book has helped me to understand them better. I look forward to the day when they read this book themselves They will gain keen insights into the heart of a fisherman. They, like all this book's readers, will learn more about themselves. I also look forward to our next fishing trips.
My lessons from this journey have moved me along to being a better father, a better son, a better husband, a better neighbor, and a more devoted follower of Jesus Christ.
I'm now convinced that it was no coincidence that Jesus surrounded himself with so many fishermen. This book is the perfect gift for the fishermen in your life, whether they believe in God or not. The chapters are short, swift, and riveting; a perfect addition to washroom magazine rack.
Dan Keating casts a perfect narrative; his angling ties together the hearts of fishermen from all places and times with the greatest love story ever told.
I highly recommend this book for you and as a gift for your dearest friends, whether or not they've baited a hook.
Captain Dan Keating has produced a compelling page turner, it is a quick but profound read. The author's gradual understanding of himself unfolds along with his further understanding of what makes us all tick, and what our real needs are. Valuable real life lessons were learned through his joys and struggles. Water, weather, fish, and boats contribute to richly described life lessons in allegory.
Family considerations take on a new and larger orbit in Catain Keating's life, but the discovery of the ultimate relationship is the crown jewel of this book. Keating is made aware of the ultimate Captain, the Creator of the sea, the winds, the fish, and all that is, including Dan Keating.
In a very gritty, non-flowery reality, Keating offers true help and direction for those who may be unsure about the spiritual need of all of us. As an able Captain responsible for lives on big water, and serving as a guide to the best possible catch, the Captain here also proves relible in things of utmost importance.
Although I am already a believer in the things spoken of in this book, as well as an avid fisherman, I found myself inspired and challenged anew to pursue the One who died and rose for us, and keep my life in the arena of true priorities. I heartily recommend this book for reading and passing around.
Dan tells the story of some of his fishing adventures in different parts of the world, in a way that you feel a part of the experience. Some are in primitive boats in remote parts of the world; others are with his kids in Florida, and some from chartering on Lake Michigan. He explores the connection to fishing that many of us have as part of our life. He shares some of his life struggles and encourages you to consider the bigger picture - what life is really about. He does this by also telling the story of how Jesus chose some fisherman 2,000 years ago as his inner circle of disciples to spread the gospel. He encourages you to examine your own life and consider for yourself God's truths. It is a book that makes you think about your very existence and consider the truths about life and Jesus. Dan has written some great "how to" books and DVD's on salmon and trout fishing. This book is a different style for him, but it will entertain and make you think unlike anything else he has written. I highly recommend it!
In this book, Captain Dan Keating provides a romping tale of fishing adventures. However, this book is more than just a good fish story! It weaves the tales of fishing in order to reveal deeper truths about life and our spiritual quest. Indeed, it is a fisherman's apologetic.
I loved the inscription to his son Ethan, a challenge to listen to his life and to continue to live with passion. I loved the forward containing a brief story about a woman contemplating suicide who gets an unexpected break. This was a perfect introduction for a book about God "helping his children believe."
There is a sense of story throughout this book that captures you. Even though I am not a trained or skilled fisherman, I could completely relate to the struggles the author presents in the story of his life and his fishing adventures. Captain Keating's passion for fishing reminded me to examine my own passions for the fingerprints of God.
The book is also peppered with wonderful quotes from Thoreau and others. Here were two of my favorites (both Thoreau)
"Many go fishing all their lives without knowing it is not fish they are after."
"A truly good book teaches me better than to read it; I must soon lay it down and commence living on its hint; what I began by reading, I must finish by acting."
I loved Keating's analogy about people
"Boats, like people, are created in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors. Some are rather fragile and best suited for shallow water. If they are caught offshore in an unexpected storm, the waves will quickly consume them. Some are designed to withstand long journeys into uncharted deep water ..."
I felt challenged by these words
"Jesus doesn't want us to be distracted by the wind or waves, the loss of a job, a broken relationship, a dwindling savings account, or a difficult health challenge. He wants us to focus on Him. The foundation of every decision, of every act of obedience and repentance, of our love for God and neighbors, is all anchored by our confidence in Jesus. When you trust Jesus with your life, work, family, health, savings, sins, recreation, abilities, everything, there's no telling what God will do in your life. Who knows, you may even find yourself walking on water!"
If you know a person who is passionate about fishing, you might like to recommend this book!
