My main place of work was at a bar that was frequented by the ‘alternative’ crowd of the time and hidden beneath a respectable city centre hotel. I knew a lot of bouncers in Leicester over the years, some were family members of mine, and no-one has ever heard of Jeff Shaw, so can't imagine that the story holds much merit of truth, other than the authors own unaccomplishments in the minority scene he worked in with Goths and Punks !
A story of the risk of achieving the ultimate physique at all costs. The degenerative nature of steroid abuse combined with pressures from unsympathetic bosses and hopeless nightclub punters are documented by Jeff in a manner that draws the reader in. Your sympathies are held as he fights his demons and tries to return to his good natured and gentle persona.
Jeff has a fantastic memory for events, as they are recalled and pieced together to form the script for his life at the doors of some of Leicester's 'alternative' nightclubs. The character descriptions evoke strong memories of the eighties and nineties with the associated Goth and sub-Goth cultures.
A very worthwhile read from a warm and frank author. Good luck Jeff... Surely some Australian stories beckon soon?!
